Australia's Top Photographers Awards

OK, so this is slightly old news but I wrote this post and never published it back in May. It’s obviously good news that I’m proud of so at the risk of blowing my own trumpet, sometimes one needs to celebrate success with others. I’m pleased to share the belated news that I’ve been named in the Top 10 in both the Editorial and Photojournalism categories in the Capture Magazine 2010 Australia’s Top Photographers Awards. Hooray me!!

As an award judged by Australia’s top commercial photographers I’m thrilled to be judged in the same league as so many photographers whose work I really admire. Editorial photographers such as Richard Bailey, Ingvar Kenne, George Fetting and Georges Antoni all rock my boat.

Australia's Top Photographers 2010 Editorial

In the photojournalism category I’m sitting alongside great Australian photographers such as the legendary Stephen Dupont, Dean Sewell of Oculi, the awesome Trent Parke of Magnum, Walkley award winner from Degree south David-Dare Parker, Narelle Autio of Agence Vue and Tamara Dean also from Oculi.

I highly recommend checking out all these photographers, they all do stunning work! Oh and of course don’t forget to check out some of my recent work ….

A BIG congratulations also to all the emerging photographer winners I know, whom I’ve been lucky enough to get to know through their success in the Projections competition. I ran Projections for the ACMP over the last couple of years and it’s a delight to see so many of them recognised again as Australia’s best emerging photographers.

In particular Natalie Grono – emerging winner overall, emerging editorial winner and emerging travel winner, Wren, emerging finalist in Advertising, Stewart Leishman, emerging winner in Wedding and emerging finalist in Architecture, Fiona Wolf, emerging finalist in Portrait, Conor Ashleigh, emerging runner up in photojournalism/documantary. Apologies if I’ve missed anyone and again check them out….

Congratulations also to Marc Gafen and the team at Yaffa and Capture magazine for putting on the awards..

Last night saw the long awaited resurrection of the Melbourne ACMP Trampoline group for emerging photographers. It’s probably been about 12 months since the last one of these and a big hand clap for photographer Sarah Anderson who has taken the initiative to get things going again.

Mark Munro spoke to the 30-40 togs gathered at Phoenix studios and gave a passionate perspective on not only his folio but also his personal visual diary and how he’s become one of the busiest commercial photographers in town. He also showed this amusing and appropriate youtube video:

If you enjoyed that or didn’t get that, maybe the straightshooting advice of the legendary John Harrington might cut through to you. Here’s the ad that he saw on Craigslist – as an emerging photographer would you do the job?…

Here’s what John had to say about this – if you even thought for a second about saying yes, well, click the link for some sage advice…. http://photobusinessforum.blogspot.com

A couple of other blog links we threw up last night for those that missed them were:

This is not Gordon Ramsay

Monday, February 15th, 2010

Have had the pleasure of photographing a couple of well known chef’s recently, Josh Emett who works for Gordon Ramsay, and Frank Camorra the creator of the fabulous Movida who is a bit of a Melbourne food icon.

Whilst I imagine photographing Gordon Ramsay would be a stressful, expletive laden frenzy of a shoot, photographing one of his proteges Josh Emett was lovely. Josh has returned to Australia to head up Gordon Ramsay’s first Australian retaurants – maze and maze grill, at the brand new Crown Metropol in Melbourne. I really liked the graphical nature if this image of Josh, photographed for The Age newspaper during construction of the new restaurant.

Frank was photographed as part of a promotional piece for the Melbourne Food & Wine Festival and was extremely gracious as we worked our way through to a final image. Frank has a lovely quiet dignity which I enjoyed working with. Having been a Movida fan since first tasting that wonderful anchovy with smoked tomato sorbet I recently visited Frank’s newest venue, Movida Aqui, a larger funky bistro styled operation that has the great advantage of doing paella. I can report back that not only was the paella fabulous but the anchoa are better than I remember! A couple of combo pics that I liked from the shoot.

Run run as fast as you can

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

In the midst of the December mayhem I shot a terrific commercial job for the “Run Melbourne” fun-run. Not only is it an event anyone can enter, you can also pick any charity at all to support through donations from friends – nice.  The event used to be known as the Run to the G and is an iconic Melbourne event featuring 5km, 10km and half marathon events – something for everyone.
Working with a tagline of Anyone Can, we had 6 unlikely fun-run characters, 6 locations (only 2 indoors) and only a week or so to produce, style, arrange talent, permissions, etc. Oh and we were busy editing a very large job for another client at the same time. Time to call on the team, with uberproducer Sav, stylist Clare and makeup lovely Nicole all flying into action. As is proven again and again, a tight deadline is a good thing, bringing about quick decisions and keeping everyone focussed. In the end our biggest hurdle was weather, with day 2 (all outdoor shoots) bucketing with rain and providing a real challenge in thinking on your feet. That and having one of your locations closing when you’re about to start shooting and can’t be rescheduled also provides some moments of panic and dread. But we managed to make everything run smoothly and had a lot of fun posing mock running style with our 6 characters.
If you’re a reader of The Age, you might have started noticing the images as ads appearing fairly frequently. A full page shot as cover of a liftout is always exciting to see when you’re flicking through the paper in bed on a Sunday morning. Here’s a few of the shots with layout – keep your eye out for them in The Age as we head to June!
